Free Genealogy and Family History Research Sites

1.www.familysearch.org - Family Search is a great family history site for beginners that allows you to search through records, learn more about family history and enroll in free online classes. This site is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Another great feature of this site is the ability to search for a local family history center near you for personal help and in person record viewing.

2.www.gendir.com – Finding genealogy information can be difficult. That is why GenDir created this unique family history research site. You can use their message boards, surname search, surname lists and more. The site offers many unique features, and promises that more are on the way.



3. www.genealogytoday.com – Genealogy Today is a free site that allows you access to a variety of unique resources as well as instruction and reference articles. This site has a few unique data collections and more is constantly being added. This site is a great resource for those interested in genealogy. One neat feature is their Wiki which provides helpful and understandable definitions to family history research terms and can be very helpful to those just getting started.

4. www.rootsweb.ancestry.com - Rootsweb is an interactive site created by Ancestry.com that creates an interactive community. You can search for your ancestors, interact with others and even volunteer on this site. This is a great research site especially for those looking to collaborate with others.

5. www.ellisisland.org – If your ancestors came to the United States through Ellis Island, then the records search on their site is a great resource for you. You can search by ship or by name on this free site without even having to subscribe. It is a great resource that you should definitely keep in mind.

6. www.myheritage.com – At My Heritage you can add your own family tree or browse the 16 million family tress here. With more than 628 million profiles and users you can find a lot of material on this site. This free site is a great place to post, connect and share your family history with others.

7. www.glorecords.blm.gov – Sometimes when finding ancestors you have to get a little creative. The BLM website allows you to search land titles which can often help you to hunt down that missing ancestor by searching through property records.

8. www.interment.net – This free site allows users to search through cemetery records from thousands of different cemeteries around the world. You can also sign up for their RSS feed and receive updates whenever new listings are added.

9. www.collectionscanada.gc.ca – If you have Canadian relatives this site from the Canadian archives can be a great resource. It also provides links for learning about genealogy and getting started.

10.www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca - Search the vital records from British Columbia on this site. You can search through WWII overseas casualties, marriages from 1859 to 1872 and baptisms that are more than 120 years old.

11. http://rsl.rootsweb.ancestry.com/#search – Getting started on your genealogy can be difficult, but this surname search from Roots Web can help. Simply enter a surname and a location and see results about how that surname arrived. This can help you know where to start searching for your relatives.

12. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp - Search the International Genealogical Index of IGI using this free service provided by the family search website.

13. http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates - The Missouri State Archives have created this site which allow you to search Missouri death certificates that more than 50 years old. Their records go back to 1910, so you can find a lot of valuable family historical information on this site. It can be searched by first and last name or year and month. You can also use this site to get a digitized copy of any certificates that you find.

14. http://www.newenglandancestors.org/database_search/AAJ.asp - NewEnglandAncestors provides this useful search. You can use this to search social security death records. This database is regularly updated and was current as of Feb 2010. Records go back to about 1965. This database has more than 85 million records.

15. http://www.familytreelegends.com/records - The Family Tree Legends site offers unique search features and several software programs for purchase.

16. http://www.cwgc.org – The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is working to create a comprehensive listing of the 1.75 million dead soldiers from the Commonwealth war. You can search their records on this site.

17. http://www.worldgenweb.org/countryindex.html - The World Gen Web Project is one of the most comprehensive searchable genealogy websites of its type. You can search by country and find records for nearly any country from Afghanistan to Gibraltar to Namibia to Zimbabwe.

18. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obituary – This database of obituaries, called the Obituaries Daily Times, is updated daily and includes thousands of obituaries dating back to 1995. Since this collection is ever growing, make sure that you check back often.

19. http://www.1901censusonline.com – Search the 1901 English census at this official site. One great feature of this site is that it allows you to search for more than just people. You can find out who was living in your home in 1901, what your ancestors were doing and even see a copy of the records.

20. http://www.blacksheepancestors.com/index.shtml - Every family has a few ancestors that they aren’t so proud of. You can search through prison records, execution records and more at Blacksheep Ancestors. This can be a valuable tool for those in the U.S. UK or Canada. You can also search through biographies.

21. http://www.sos.wa.gov/history/genealogy.aspx - The Washington State Library has an extensive collection of resources for those looking to do genealogical research. You can request obituaries, search land records, find records of military service, search the census and more at this site.

22. http://www.vitalrec.com – Vitalrec is known as being the most comprehensive resource for locating vital records. You can search their index of birth certificates, death certificates and marriage licenses easily. This site is only useful when looking for U.S. records. If you find the records you need, they can be ordered for a fee.

23. http://www.theshipslist.com – The Ship’s List has been a useful online resource for genealogy research since 1999. You can search their database of passengers on various ships. Information about shipwrecks and immigration reports are also available here.

24. http://www.jewishgen.org – Jewish Gen is a valuable resource for those with Jewish ancestry. It is powered by Ancestry.com. This site offers a great getting started in Jewish genealogy course for beginners.

25. http://www.afrigeneas.com/sitemap.shtml - Finding African American family history can be a little difficult. However, AfriGenes makes the process much simpler. This site is a great genealogy resource for African Americans. Their vision is to find and document the last slave and first African in each family.

26. http://www.isu.edu/~trinmich/oregontrail.html - If you have family that walked the Oregon Trail, this site may provide valuable information. You can learn about the trail and read their archives.

27. http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/RecordSeriesInfo.aspx?rsid=2 – Search the naturalization records for Washington on this site provided by the Washington State Archives.

28. http://genealogy.about.com/cs/free_genealogy/a/free_sites.htm - Check out this list of 101 genealogy resources provided by About.com. These resources are all free which makes this list a very affordable way to get started on your genealogy.

29. http://www.cs.williams.edu/~bailey/genealogy - Keeping track of the information you find can be a little difficult with out the right forms. These free forms will help keep you organized.

30. http://www.familytreetemplates.net – These free family tree templates are a great resource for putting your genealogy information together. They are available from FreeFamilyTreeTemplates.net.

31. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gentutor/chart.html - When getting started in family history it can be difficult to know how you are related to various relatives. This chart provided by RootsWeb will help you understand the relationships between various family members.

32. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bwo – Books We Own is a site hosted by Roots Web that has a collection of volunteers willing to do genealogical research in a collection of books. There are more than 2000 volunteers willing to search through their collections of books.

33. http://www.ancestralfindings.com/guidelines.htm - Ancestral findings will provide you with one free look up each day for various records. This free service can really be a benefit, especially if you use it regularly.

34. http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10151&categoryId=14000&langId=-1&cg1=13669&cg2=&cg3=&cg4=&cg5= - PAF or Personal Ancestral File is a free genealogy program offered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a great program to use to store your ancestral information on your personal computer.

35. http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/cs/home - The National Genealogical Society is a non profit organization established to help all those interested in family history. It provides resources for the beginner to the advanced family historian on their site. They sponsor a yearly conference which you can learn about on their site as well as several contest and awards.

36. http://www.findagrave.com – As you discover your ancestors, you might want to pay a visit to their graves. However, travel isn’t always possible, so Find a Grave comes to the rescue. You can view more 54 million grave records on this site and can even become a contributor and add records of your own.

37. http://www.cyndislist.com – For a comprehensive list of genealogy sites, check out Cyndi’s List. It is a great resource and will direct you to some great sites.

38. http://www.geneabios.com – If you want more information about the lives of your ancestors, check out Geneabios. This site posts biographies from people all over the world compiled by genealogists and real people. You can post a bio of your own, or browse through their ever growing collection.

39. http://www.genesreunited.co.uk – This UK social networking site can reunite families and can serve as a great genealogy resource for those with an UK background. Register and start searching their database of 752 million names. They even have a family tree builder to help you start finding family.

40. http://www3.old-yearbooks.com - This is a great resource for finding old high school and college yearbooks, around the U.S. 41. http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/banners/genealogy.htm - This site by the Oregon State Archives has some great resources for researchers.

42. http://www.castlegarden.org – You can use this free site to search through more than 11 million immigration records from 1820 to 1892. This site is maintained by the Battery Conservancy.

43. http://www.avotaynu.com/csi/csi-home.htm - Avotaynu is a surname search website for those of Jewish descent. Information is available for nearly 700,000 names. You can even use this site to determine if a surname is actually Jewish.

44. http://www.gencircles.com – GenCircles allows you to search their directory of user submitted family trees. You can find your ancestors and common lines using this site.

45. http://www.genealogytoday.com/info/newsletter/gentoday-l.html - This free newsletter is available by subscription from Genealogy Today and will provide tips, information and more. It is a great way to stay updated on the current happenings on the Genealogy today site.

46. http://www.thirdstbooks.com/ybookonline.html - If you have family from Washington state, you might be able to find them in one of these various online yearbooks. It can be a great way to put a face with a relative’s name. This collection is growing, but can only be searched by school and date, not relative’s name.

47. http://www.distantcousin.com – Distant Cousin offers an online archive of records and images. Their sources are far reaching and include yearbooks, census records, obituaries and more. In fact they have more than 1,500 sources. This site is completely free and a great place to start researching.

48. http://www.gencircles.com – At Geneanet you can build an online family tree, share your family history and learn more about how to research properly. You can also search their collection of records.

49. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native - If you have Native American ancestry, you know that finding records and information can be difficult. This site by Access Genealogy provides help, records and the ability to search. The access site has great information for others as well.

Paid Research Sites

50. http://www.ancestry.com – Ancestry.com is one of the best resources for online research out there. This site offers a collection of more than 6 billion records. Their subscriptions are less than $30 a month for a world wide membership and free trials are typically available.

51. http://data.genealogytoday.com/contents/Prison_Records.html - You can search this collection of prison records at Genealogy Today for free, but a paid subscription is required to view any records.

52. http://www.familytreedna.com/default.aspx - Family Tree DNA aims to make family research a little simple. This paid service completes a DNA test which is then used to find your roots. This can be a great tool for those that are adopted or that need a little help with their research.

53. http://www.onegreatfamily.com/Home.aspx?AID=9700771&PID=2912392&SID=blogtopsubscriptionsites – Have you ever wondered how your family is connected to other families in the world? This site will eventually provide the answer. You can search their records to find out how your family fits in or use this site for research. There is a 7 day free trial to help you decide if this site is worth a membership. Subscriptions are about $10 a month without a commitment or $5 a month with a year contract.

54. http://go.footnote.com/genealogyrecords/?p=d&xid=887 - If you want to add some interest to your genealogical records, consider adding in photos and records from Footnote. This site is a subscription site and the regular price for a year is $79.95 for unlimited access.

55. https://www.myfamily.com – A great part of doing family history work is getting to share it with your family and get to reconnect with them. This social networking site allows you to share family history with your family. Membership is very low priced and starts at $9.95 per year which price includes membership for the entire family.

56. https://www.worldvitalrecords.com – This is a great research site, with fairly affordable pricing. You can sign up for their weekly newsletter at no charge, which provides tips, articles and more. The search results on World Vital Records are regularly updated, so you shouldn’t have any problem finding current information.

57. http://www.origins.net/Welcome.aspx - If you have Irish or British ancestry the Origins.net site is a valuable resource. Their records date back to the 13th century and are very easy to search. They have a 3 membership plan available if you just want to search for a few days, which is an affordable option for those hoping to quickly do some research here.

58. . http://www.newspaperarchive.com – If you want to search for your family in newspapers, a subscription to the Newspaper Archive site will really pay off. This site is pretty affordable and offers annual memberships. You can search 300 years of records and add a little depth to your family history.

Family History Conferences and Courses

59. http://ce.byu.edu/cw/cwgeneal - Each year Brigham Young University holds 2 family history conferences- a Conference on Computerized Family History and Genealogy and the Conference on Family History and Genealogy. These conferences are a great way to learn more about family history and to interact with others that share your passion.
